Sonia Hems

Pilates Reformer Instructor

Why Pilates Reformer?

Over my career performing with professional dance companies - as well as teaching dance, stretch, and body conditioning - a strong body that could withstand maximum physical exertion with minimum injury was paramount. Effective body conditioning programmes that were anatomically sound were imperative, and that's when I developed my strong belief in the principles and practices of Pilates.

What qualifications and experience do you have?

Having danced the styles of Jazz, Ballet and Tap since the age of 3, and competing and training in competitive aerobics throughout my teenage years, I went on to study full time at both the New Zealand School of Dance and the International Ballet Academy as a Classical Ballet Major. I also studied nutrition, anatomy and Pilates, as well as sports performance. On completing my training, I travelled to London, where I toured Europe performing with professional dance companies as well as teaching dance, stretch, and body conditioning (Pilates-based). On my return to New Zealand, I became immersed in Street Latin, and have been performing and competing Salsa at a professional level for the last 5 years, gaining national and international titles, and now teaching and adjudicating internationally. I also completed a Bachelor of Arts in Psychology, and enjoy a holistic approach to coaching that incorporates both body and mind. I have been teaching stretch, Pilates, body conditioning and rehabilitative conditioning for leading companies around Auckland over the last 7 years. I have a passion for encouraging functional, durable, strength that aids maximum enjoyment of daily life, and fostering practical conditioning habits that are effective and maintainable.
